McEwen Defends Viterra Title, Earns Return Trip to Brier

Mike McEwen and his Fort Rouge team have successfully defended the Manitoba Viterra Championship which they won a year ago. McEwen defeated Reid Carruthers (West St. Paul)  8-7 Sunday afternoon at Stride Place in Portage in a re-match of the 2015 title game which had been won by Carruthers.

With the victory, McEwen and teammates BJ Neufeld, Matt Wozniak, and Denni Neufeld win the provincial championship and the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the Tim Hortons Brier in St. John’s, Newfoundland/Labrador in March.

A four for McEwen on the eighth end was the key to the victory which puts McEwen on the very short list of teams who have won back to back championships. The list includes only Jeff Stoughton, who won two in a row twice plus three in a row [...] Read more

CurlManitoba Hosts First Draw-Tap-Hit Provincial Event

The provincial playoffs in Manitoba’s first Draw-Tap-Hit competition took place between draws Sunday at the Viterra Championship in Stride Place, Portage la Prairie.

Across the province of Manitoba, earlier this season, over 500 youngsters took part in competitions within clubs and some 165 of them advanced to regional playoffs.

The provincial shoot-out featured 28 young people with all regions of the province represented in each age group.

Three age categories took part. The 6-8 year olds played ‘the short game’, shooting from the hack to the near rings. The 9-10 year olds and the 11-13 year olds all used the full sheet of ice for their shots, accumulating points for the accuracy of their nose hit on a rock biting the back of the button, tap of a [...] Read more

Team McEwen Earns a Place in Manitoba Curling History

By advancing to the Viterra Championship final game, Mike McEwen and his team will play in their fourth consecutive Manitoba final game. McEwen joins Bruce Hudson as the only skip to play in four finals in a row. Hudson won the British Consols in 1964 and 1967 and lost the final in 1965 to Terry Braunstein and again in 1966 to Hersh Lerner.

The key difference between Team McEwen and Hudson is that McEwen played with the same line-ups in the consecutive run while Hudson did not – giving BJ Neufeld, Matt Wozniak, and Denni Neufeld an equal share of the Manitoba curling history spotlight.

McEwen had previously played in three in a row from 2010 to 2012 but missed the final when Jeff Stoughton played Sean Grassie in the 2013 final in Neepawa. The Team McEwen [...] Read more

McEwen-Carruthers; Final a Re-Match of 2015

2016 Champion Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge) is set for a re-match with 2015 champion Reid Carruthers (West St. Paul) in the final game of the 2017 Viterra Championship at Stride Place in Portage.

McEwen defeated Trevor Loreth (Granite) x in the Sunday morning final game.

From the opening end, there seemed little doubt of the result as McEwen launched a full scale attack. Loreth’s fourth shooter Brad Haight rubbed a guard with his first stone double kill attempt. It was a shot that was automatic for Haight in three wins Saturday but it was a sign that today things would be different.

A first end three for McEwen followed by a blank and then three single steals had the reigning champions leading 5-0 at the mid-game break. The game ended in eight ends with a final 8-2 score.
