Top seed Reid Carruthers and his 2015 Manitoba champions from West St. Paul have advanced to the 2017 Viterra Championship final game with a 4-2 victory Saturday evening over reigning champion Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge). The unbeaten Carruthers team has now won six games in a row and is a win away from the provincial title.
After blanking the first four ends, Carruthers gave up a steal of one on the fifth and scored one of his own on the sixth end. After a blank seventh end, the game turned in the eighth end when McEwen’s stone picked and he came up short on a draw facing two. McEwen hit for one on the ninth to trail 3-2 coming home. Facing two coming home, Carruthers drew to the back of the button for one and a 4-2 win.
On the bottom side of the Page Playoff Draw, Trevor Loreth (Granite) kept a dream run alive with an 8-3 win over #5 seed Jason Gunnlaugson. After qualifying for the first time and then losing Friday evening, Team Loreth won three in a row Saturday with victories over #7 Dennis Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial), #4 William Lyburn (Granite) and #5 Gunnlaugson.
In the Sunday 9AM semi-final, McEwen meets Loreth for the right to play Carruthers in the 3PM championship final.
Both Sunday games will be broadcast on Sportsnet with Rob Faulds and Jeff Stoughton calling the play.
