Jason Gunnlaugson and Granite team bounced back from a morning loss to Sean Grassie with a 7-4 win over provincial junior champion JT Ryan (Assiniboine Memorial) on the late afternoon draw Thursday at the 2017 Viterra Championship at Portage’s Stride Place.
Gunnlaugson led Ryan 4-2 at the fifth end break and added a three on the seventh end to go up 7-3. Ryan blanked the eighth end but could score only a single with the hammer on the ninth and conceded the 7-4 victory for Team Gunnlaugson.
Unlike Gunnlaugson’s rebound, Hayden Forrester (Fort Rouge) and Randy Neufeld (Portage), who had also lost on the early draw, both lost again on the 4:00PM draw. Forrester was beaten 7-5 by Kyle Foster (Arborg) while Neufeld lost 8-3 to Travis Bale (East St. Paul)
In other games, CurlManitoba Board Members Ray Baker and Darren Oryniak both scored victories. Baker and his Dauphin team were 8-4 winners over Graham Freeman (Virden) and Oryniak, playing third for his son Derek, defeated Shaun Parsons (Burntwood) 8-2. Granite‘s Oryniak team was skipped yesterday by Weston Oryniak – making Darren one of a rare few curlers who have played Manitoba championship games skipped by two sons.
As the games were B-Side matches, they were elimination games placing the losing teams all now on the sidelines.
