Lyburn Makes Big Comeback as Top Four Seeds Advance

Fourth Seeded William Lyburn (Granite) was the last winner off the ice Friday morning as the top four seeds in the 2017 Viterra Championship all qualified for the Playoff Round at Stride Place in Portage.

Lyburn had an apparent late start to his game while opponent Sean Grassie (Fort Rouge) got off to a fast start and a six point lead after three ends. Once the Lyburn foursome got started, they were unstoppable – mounting an impressive comeback to tie Grassie 6-6 after seven ends en route to an 11-7 victory.

Top seeded Reid Carruthers and his 2015 Manitoba champions from West St. Paul defeated David Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial) 9-6; second seed and reigning champion Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge) bested Trevor Loreth (Granite) 6-2; and third seed Matt Dunstone (Deer Lodge) was a 7-5 victor over Taylor McIntyre (Pembina)

The morning victors all advance direct to the playoff round while the losers return to the ice at 4PM with a second chance to qualify.

At 4PM, Loreth will play the winner of a 12:15PM game between Steve Irwin (Brandon) and Kelly Marnoch (Carberry); McIntyre plays the winner between Travis Bale (East St. Paul) and Dennis Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial); Grassie meets the winner between Jason Gunnlaugson (Granite) and Kyle Foster (Arborg); and David Bohn takes on the winner of a Ray Baker (Dauphin) vs Derek Oryniak (Granite) game.

The first playoff round takes place at Stride Place at 7:45PM.
